in the communist bar with wafiq, amelia's friend. wafiq is a real lefty journalist. "I'm a muslim," he told us as he took another swig from his beer, "but i don't believe in god." he was in his late forties now, with thick rimmed dense prescription glasses and a messy knot in his tie. he is having problems getting published. "sadly, there were two problem with communism," he lemented in a heavy lebanese accent, "first, there is a problem with the theory... then, there is a problem with the practice." i wish my dad could have joined us for pistachios and lebanese beers here. though we really should have been drinking cuba libres.

che and the lebanese flag. i still think my dad has more pictures of che in his office.
