amelia & i took a trip to one the most wellknown crusader castles on the eastern coast of syria. about an hour inland from latakia. A pointed out that even though lawrence of arabia called it a miracle of medieval military strategy in an undergraduate thesis of his, the castle was taken by salah ad-din after a short two-day seige. we had the castle to ourselves -- in truth, the forest surrounding the castle was more spectacular than the structure itself. breathing oxygen was refreshing.
