boring roman ruins? there used to be a bustling oasis town here util the french kicked everyone out in the early 1920s. in fact, families had built houses inside the temple, just in the last century. oh yeah, this is tempel bel, at tadmor (palmyra)in the middle of the syrian desert.

tadmor used to be an oasis, but lumber companies in the past 100 years made this mountain bare (the mausoleum at the top of the mountain only became visible recently).
